New stator needed
Hi guys. My 78 Sport needs a new stator. Are there any alternatives to the stock item. They are quite rare and very expensive.

- What's wrong with your current stator? or at least what are the symptoms that give you cause for concern?
- Many of us have our old stators repaired. There are still several companies in the UK who provide this service (there are various discussions on this forum about which companies provide this service, costs, and the results)
- A great question - are there any alternatives to the stock item?... I don't know of any complete replacements apart from the Kokusan system that Moto Morini fitted to some New Yorks, Darts, Excalibur, and Coguaro models, however there just might be alternatives. How about asking Soren in Denmark? he is well versed in these bikes and who has multiple Darts and other models.
The kokusan system replaces the entire ignition system and uses the bike's battery. The rotor is a different shape and might not fit under the standard, narrow non-electric start right engine cover (you can replace it with one from a bike that does have this system e.g. from a Dart.
If you do find alternatives to the stator please share the information here.
PS: If it were my bike I'd first investigate what's wrong with the current stator and inspect all the coils and wiring as some problems are relatively simple and easy to repair.

Re: New stator needed
Thanks for the reply. I had a Little fire in the positive circuit and a I now only get 1/2 the normal ac volts from the stator.
I have a NLM ignition and standard regulator, rectifier.
I fitted a later stator last time I changed, without a white wire so therein is my confusion.
I’m not sure about the magnet either.
Any I’ll look into rewinding the original kaput stator and put the later white wireless one on the shelf.
The bike runs fine but doesn’t charge

Re: New stator needed
What was the extent of your "little fire"? do you mean something got so hot it started burning? and/or that there was a fire that may have damaged the stator and/or other parts of the charging and wiring?
The white wire from the stator is generally an extra 'earth' return and I believe it's used for the transducers.
