Strada engine question

Hello Folks,
I've had a quick look at my newly obtained wreck, Strada 3 1/2 K model, registered 1983 but likely 1981/2 . There is no engine number, it is an import from Europe. There is no flywheel stator fitted, no wonder the previous owners friends couldn't get it going!, the flywheel is the non electric start type, no drum and no starter motor mechanism inside the casing, although the casing is electric start, painted black along with the rocker covers, but the left side is plain aluminium. It has a black pickup. I wonder if the engine has been replaced?. My question is, is there any way to tell the difference externally between the electric start motor and the earlier non starter motor engine?, apart from the previously mentioned.
Thanks,
Alan.
