Hi folks, a friend in Italy wants to sell his '82 500 Sei. I tried talking him out of it but to no avail...

It's an absolute perfect bike. I tried following him through the hills near Siena but that was impossible.

I am interested in buying Simone's bike but I can't get UK insurers to cover an Italian reg bike. Have you ever ridden a bike back? How did you get around the insurance point.

No I haven't. In general I took them in my van (into NL that is).
Isn't there such a thing as a temporary insurance? Maybe for a temporary UK-license as well? Because when you buy the bike it's license plate will probably stay in Italy
and you get the paperwork with a stamp on it saying that it has been exported to another EU-country.
I know that when I export a bike from NL I get a temporary license to get the bike abroad.

I've not done it myself but I imagine the cheapest & easiest way to get the bike back would be to hire a van.

Rules might be different for new or used bikes? I think the process is simple enough, just a bit daunting if you've not done it before. There might be others on here who have done it or know more about it.

I spoke to Simone and he's investigating if it's possible to get a temporary licenseplate and insurance from Italy. But knowing the Italian red tape I think it's good to check if an English version exists...

No import taxes within EU.

Customs and Excise are only interested in VAT on new or nearly new vehicles (less than 6 months or 6000 miles). The DVLA caused them no end of trouble over retrospective NOVA applications and I believe C&E have now persuaded DVLA that NOVA is not needed on vehicles over 30 years old. They were asking for NOVA on UK made vehicles than had never left the UK!

It's easy to register on the C&E website and you'll have all the relevant information to apply on-line. The last time I did it, I had the approval email within an hour.

After much searching I have found that footman James will insure it on the frame or vin number.
Only the plate I haven't resolved yet.
Yes I know a van would be easier but that's not the point!
There is a C&E catagory for collectables which would mean tax is low even if they try so I'll take the risk on that.

Looks like my plan is going to work.
Footman James was the only insurance company that would cover me before the bike had a UK reg. They were also the only company who would provide European breakdown recovery for a non Uk registration bike.
Next issue was that in Italy the plate should stay with the seller not on the bike. However the seller has found that I can get special dispensation to keep the plate for my ride back to the UK as long as I swear some documents with a municipal official and promise to post the plate back to Italy once I get to the Uk.
All that's left is to actually make it home!

I dumped Footman James (after the Aeon buyout) in part because they would only cover an unregistered bike for 30 days. Pater James (previously of Footman James) provide annual cover, so all my unregistered projects are insured for fire and theft.

I tried Peter James first but they would not cover me at all for an unregistered vehicle!

How was the ride home? I saw there was quite some water in France that should have been in rivers etc... :/
