Swop gear change side 500 Morini.

Post by caddy4037 »

Good afternoon all.

I'm looking to reverse the brake and gear change levers on my 1981 Morini, that is to have the gear change on the right and brake on the left.

I was wondering if anyone had done this. ?

I will need a right side gear lever, a left side brake pedal, need to move the brake cylinder and fluid holder to the left side, fabricate a rod for the brake lever to connect with the brake cylinder, New brake fluid pipe.

Is there anything else that I hadn't thought about. ?

Thanks for any help.

Regards Frank, milford haven.

Thats the way all Morinis came in the 1980s, with a right hand gearchange. Not sure what's happened to your bike?!

Hi Simon.

Indeed it has a complex system of rods and joints which takes the gear change from right to left, another benefit is that it would be great to get rid of that to take play out of the gear change.

The frame has braketry on the right side for the brake cylinder and fluid reservoir.

Thanks, Frank.

Interesting, are the frame brake & gear lever brackets the same as standard? I'll probably have a spare correct levers if you are interested pm me.

With the original left brake lever/right gear change setup, the brake has a remote reservoir on the right with a pipe connecting it to the master cylinder on the left. Assuming the frame brackets are still in place, I would hope the master cylinder could be just repositioned and a new connecting pipe added. Appropriate levers + gear linkage still required as the gear change mechanism uses a connecting rod to link between the gear change lever and gear change shaft. The parts list is a good reference to see the layout.

The bike came with those rear sets and the rods and fittings, I've taken them off.

Photos from the post that you referenced are helpful thank you.
