A few years ago the approach to a tank with a bit of surface rust in it was to line the tank, rather than deal with the rust.

I successfully resurrected a Puch GP moped tank (from my Mk1 hill climber and then the Rotarini) that had been sitting in a leaky greenhouse for years. The full POR15 kit from Frosts did the trick.

Cheers for the comments, I'll look into the Real Classic method further as I'm all for doing stuff on the cheap... might not do it naked in the kitchen tho'...

Caustic soda added, scary... I can't see how I can do this without ruining the paint (which will be a real shame as it is so good) despite lots of wrapping/precautions etc. I'll let you all know the outcome...

So, I said I'd let you all know the outcome... the caustic soda bath hasn't touched the old tank sealer other than making it go hard, but the drop I splashed on the paintwork affected it instantly... Oh well, make way for plan "B" - using a 3D printer to make a new tank from paper! (I may have lied slightly just there, plan "B" is to strip the sealer with acetone.)

Looks like the gunge in the carb's may have been a red herring. All back together and still a fuel supply issue... it would appear that the electro magnetic fuel tap has been playing up, probably since we got the 'bike. I disconnected the fuel hose and checked the operation of the tap and it seems to please itself as to how and when it opens, despite there being a healthy reaction from the relay. Oh well, a couple of new manual taps are now on order so we should be all sorted by the end of the week.

Meant to say, went with POR15 in the end as I'd heard good reports.

Taps fitted, tank back on and fired up first kick. Will have to set the carb's up properly as the tickover is a bit erratic but it now runs on two and picks up like a two stroke! Found a great guide to carb' set up on N.L.M.'s website - should be very handy.

I did a video on carb balancing. I recommend removing and blanking off the balance pipe between the two carbs.

Cheers Paul, Had a look at your video and see you've posted loads with regard to Morinis. Will have to view a few of them one wet day. Haven't had a chance to set mine up yet but will be the first time I've seen my carb' balancing kit in a decade or more - no need to balance the carb's on my other vee twins... Will need to sort the Morini as I've just fitted new cables, makes such a difference to the feel of the throttle - the old ones were getting well past it.
