I’ve now spent some quality time in the garage, fiddling on my new (to me) Camel.
The list of actions include:
Replacing and/or re-routing cables, clutch, speedo, rev counter and throttle.
Repositioning front brake hose
Fitting the correct carb rubbers and new air filters
Fitting knobblies
Replacing the ignition switch after the key dropped out on an early shake down test (but the bike kept on running)!
I’ve now been out for a longer run and have a couple of issues that I could do with some advise on:
1) With the engine not running, the throttle action is smooth. With the engine running the is significant “sticktion” in the throttle, and some rev hang, if I release the throttle at this point (slight throttle opening). The bike appears to be generally running well, apart from this issue. It feels like the engine is sucking the carb slide against the carb. I have applied oil to the slide, but there was no improvement. Any ideas?
2) The other issue is the inlet spigot has come loose, what is the accepted method to tighten this up? Is a special tool required?
Any ideas on the above issues would be much appreciated as I’m itching to get out on the bike!

Re: Sticking throttle
Which Camel, 500 or 501?
501s have steel tanks but most 500s have fibreglass tanks, If so it could be an ethanol fuel issue with the slides becoming coated and sticky?
First as you mentioned change/re-route the cables, fit newcarb rubbers/filters, tighten inlet spigot etc plus clean/service, tune and balance the carbs
To tighten the inlet spigot use anything that fits well into the slots eg flat tyre lever, bar, spanner etc
Good luck, Ian

Re: Sticking throttle
A smear of loctite on the spigot threads won’t go amiss if it come loose again.
Assuming flat slide carbs are the slides showing wear?
Are the carb tops on the right way round?
The highest part should face towards the engine.

Re: Sticking throttle
Spot on diagnosis!
The carbs had a sticky deposit on the back side of the slide. Once removed with disc brake cleaner, tightening the spigot and removed most of the slack in the cables, it started first kick, ticked over well and not sticktion!
Thank you Ian, John and Benjy (who I also called).
