Crankcase breather hose length

Post by Daddy Dom »

I've seen a few different lengths for these, so is there a "best practice" length for the crankcase breather hose? Mine ends up just above the battery but I've seen some that go past the seat or even down the mudguard.

Just a warning to everyone - on my 500 the breather pipe was routed along the seat frame and stopped around the shock mount. I rode 220 miles on a warm summer's day (yes, we do get them) and coming off the motorway realised the back brake was not working... oil on the rear disc. I re routed the breather pipe to t'other side and it oiled the chain instead!.

Aound the back edge of the tool tray would be stock, but there would be no harm in extending it other than aesthetics.

The most important thing is that it has its full complement of labyrinths .There should be two right up close to the crankcase stub.

No oil from the breather with the labyrinths in place and a healthy engine.

Don't know about the Morini but old Triumph's had a tuned length of breather and getting it wrong could end up with oil
loss.

My breather setup & seems to be OK, doesn't smell of hot oil after a run anymore. Only had one air/oil seperator ever since we owned the bike.
Was warned that you have to have the separator fitted!!
