control cable length

Post by Norton »

Hi all,
I am currently rebuilding my '74 strada.
I recently purchased some cables from venhill and found them to be the wrong lengths. I've seen from previous posts that ev_guru has made his own, can he or anyone else provide some details for correct cable lengths or is it just try till it fits?
Cheers,
Norton

Having problems with Venhill cables is the reason I started making my own.

It's understandable that ready made cables might be too long, they still fit, but short ones don't.

What I couldn't put up with was the inner wire length being wrong and with cast-on nipples pulling off.

Again, there is some excuse for throttle cable inners being the wrong length as there are differences in the cable blocks on the twistgrips, but if the inner length was consistent there should be enough range in the adjusters to take care of it.

Make cables to the length needed, starting with the outer casing.

Hi Norton. I was at NLM at the weekend with my tape measure and the cables which Venhill supply to them for the early Strada are 44" outer cable for the clutch and 40" outer for the front brake. I know that you are looking for longer cables and if you order a standard Strada cable on the Venhill website, there is a comments section in the order form where they invite you to ask for a cable of however many inches longer than standard which, they say, is what they will then supply with no apparent change in the cost of the item.......

Sorry but I made a mistake in my last post: the clutch cable measured 42" outer. The oversize front brake cable was supplied by Venhill at no extra charge within three or four days and looks fine.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for that I will contact them shortly.
Did consider evguru's suggestion but not had the time to pursue that direction, thanks anyway.
