Starter motor oil/grease availability

Post by funsize »

Evening! 1980 MK5 Strada. I have searched the forums (probably ineffectively) to find what spec is needed to top up/replace. I found a thread suggesting an 80/90 gear oil or similar. I had a more 2013 Guzzi Bellagio and with modern oils, didn’t need the old molyslip-type additives. I used Putoline’s SP Gear oil, fully synthetic 75/90 in my gearbox and shaft and had no issues or known wear after 45k miles, would this type of oil do the job, if not what do the brains trust chaps think? And is it only 25ml/cc capacity? Thanks in advance 😊

The film volume is only about 25 mL. You can use something like EP80 gearbox oil. As I have some Moly paste I just stir a tiny bit in first ( rightly or wrongly) and fill using a syringe until it overflows then take a drop out to enable me to refit the rubber bung, in my case this is a poor fit.
Any evidence of a gold like deposit in the old oil indicates wear to the bronze gear, which will happen eventually.
