Progress is being made.

Nice of you to take the bike out into the sunshine.

The engine is now fitted back into the frame after having some spacers re made by a friend that were missing. I have also spent some time removing the seat cover which is in remarkably usable condition to (a) undo an Italian made to fit another bike bodge on the saddle frame and (b) wire brushing the frame in preparation for re painting. I spent so much time on (a) that I’d had enough and didn’t get round to (b). I did however, trial fit the tank to the bike to see what the colour scheme that the previous owner spent his cash on doing. Whilst not factory spec I found it to be rather aesthetically pleasing. I say to hell with the rivet counters it’s going to stay that way. It is also not going to have correct Tresette handlebars as I can’t find a good useable set and a repro set will cost too much so the G3L ones are going to stay. Next on the hit list is a wiring loom and some rear footrests and finish the saddle.I than have to source a suitable set of clutch and handbrake levers. That is about it for now.

REBUILD UPDATE

In between holidays, 40’s events and a slow down in cash flow, I have progressed much better than I expected. I have rewired the bike using a loom bought from Italy, purchased a new Silentium silencer and a front pipe, and now need to get rubber bits and rear foot pegs from Startgomma. The rewiring was a bit of a mare as although the supplier stated that original colour coding was used in the new loom, sadly it was not all correct per the very rudimentary diagram supplied which was a direct copy of the one in the user manual which was not a lot of help and did not show what went where from the sub loom from the dip switch. So out came the trusty digital multimeter and a lot of head scratching and rude words later, I finally have a headlight, stop light, low and main beam, horn and ignition working with the red tell tale lighting up when the key is pushed in. I flicked the points when the ignition was on and was rewarded by a spark which shows that the condenser is a goodun. Saddle, right side panel and chain guard are now in place and I now have to get a throttle cable, clutch cable and front brake cable so I can start seeing what I have to do to get a useable clutch. It looks as if I just might be able to get it finished and running to put on the stand at Shepton Mallet in February, so fingers crossed.

Hi any one know what the best spark plug for a Tresette running on the original 6v system is?

I can't remember what length plug thread you'll need but in the NGK range I'd suggest a 6 will be about right. So short reach = B6HS and long reach = B6ES. If you find yourself A Tutto Gas absolutely everywhere a 7 might run a little cooler.

Latest update:

I now have a fully working electrical system, found out that the Bosch coil that came with the box of bits delivers a very healthy spark, have made up a front brake and a clutch cable and have a clutch that works. I have to wait for some new rear footrests and a few more rubber bits that I’ve ordered from Startgomma before I can fit the exhaust system, get a new throttle cable and some fuel pipe and then fit the tank, put some go juice in keep my fingers crossed and see if it runs. I will post pictures of the finished article when this has all been done. Oh almost forgot, buy a number plate and take it off SORN.

Now we’re getting to the scary bit. The parts from Start Gomma arrived today so now the rear footrests are fitted holding on the nice shiny new silencer along with the rubber bits ordered, fuel pipe fitted and now waiting to receive the throttle cable. Fingers firmly crossed when fitted it actually starts. I should be getting the decals from Italy on Friday, does anyone know of an inert clear lacquer to protect them that wont react with either the paint or the decals, or are the decals robust enough to not need any further protection?

Well, The great day has finally arrived all the missing bits have arrived and are fitted and after a bit of a rough running start yesterday due to me not setting the the ignition timing correctly and blocked jets in the carburettor, with help from Arthur Farrow on the phone today I got it sorted and I now have a complete and sweetly running Tresette. As we are unable to download video I can’t post it here, but it’s on the MRC Warwickshire Section WhatsApp group if you’re interested. I’d like to thank you all for the encouragement in getting this project to fruition and I am glad to have been able to save one from the scrap bin. A Tutto Gas!
