Electric starter question

Hi, with a new battery, the electric starter on my 83 Sport turns over a treat but the bike won't fire. Using the kick starter, it always goes first or third kick.
Anyone know why it wouldn't fire up on the button?

It's not turning over fast enough.

Mine was like this - I had only about 186 ohms on my green wire from the generator but after it was rewound and up to 300 ish, and I'd cleaned out the starter motor the bike started pretty well.Best improvement after this was to fit the "later" starter clutch shoes.
Then the solenoid contacts welded on at Cadwell, which a well aimed punch sorted out.

the coil was recently rewound to 300+ but I will check the measurement and look at the starter.
